JUSTICE MINISTER SAYS EXPERTS WITNESSES FACE GREATER CHALLENGES IN COURT

Expert witnesses face ever more challenging and complex issues when assisting the Court, according to Justice Minister Bridget Prentice.

Speaking at the annual Bond Solon Expert Witness Conference, she said the justice system needed experts to be available in sufficient numbers, in a well regulated profession and with a proper understanding of Court procedure.

Updating delegates, the Minister went on to say that the Law Commission has started to examine the use of expert evidence in the criminal courts, the Civil Justice Council is presently reviewing procedures relating to experts in civil cases and the family courts are considering how far the principles set out in the General Medical Council's guidance to experts, 'Bearing Good Witness' can be applied.
