EXPERT WITNESSES COULD END UP 'ON THE BOX' AS WELL AS IN THE WITNESS BOX

Expert witnesses could end up on the 'box' as well as in the witness box if the criminal justice system decides to follow the lead of the UK's top prosecutor.

In a wide-ranging interview ahead of his formal appointment, the new Director of Public Prosecutions, Kier Starma, says that he does not object to the idea of TV cameras in the courtroom on certain types of criminal cases.

He added that he believed that it was vitally important that the public have the chance to see justice being done.

Although there was a limited pilot study in 2006 investigating how trials could be televised, no formal proposals have yet been put forward.
